Shivanasamudra waterfalls had been on my mind for quite a while. So on our way back from BR hills we decided to stop and enjoy the falls. Though the falls would be most voluminous during the monsoons, September is good season to pay a visit.
Shivanasamudra falls in the Mandya district of Karnataka. The Cauvery river (which is the lifeline here) after meandering all over the Deccan plateau , gets segmented and forms 2 waterfalls :
Barachukki
Gaganchukki
I was aware that there is a hydro-electric power station here , but later came to know that this was the first hydroelectric power station of Asia and used to supply power to the Kolar Gold fields. This was set up in the year 1902.

There is a granite boulder which marks the entrance to these falls. From there there are about 100 odd steps to maneuver which leads you to ground level. Whats important here is the view provided at each step is different and enthusiastic photographer can fire away. It was extremely hot here and the sun spared no mercy. Ensure you have good sun protection gear and loads of water with you.
