Arakkal Museum, Kannur, Kerala

Among the various places we visited in Kannur, Arakkal Museum was enchanting , displaying the artifacts, photographs, historical records  and lifestyle of the Arakkal royal family built in Kerla style architecture

Arakkal Museum is dedicated to the Arakkal family.

This family is the only Muslim royal family in Kerela. In 1663, Arakkal family bought St. Angelo's Fort from the Dutch and exerted considerable influence in the Malabar region.
It seems very progressive of the family to accept the eldest member irrespective of being male or female as the ruler. In 1870, the British seized the fort and build their military base in Malabar region.
They also undertook the construction of a tunnel connecting this fort to Thalassery Fort.

Its actually the Durbar hall section of the palace which has been converted into the museum.

Although the renovation has been carried out by  the government , the royal palace is still owned
by the Arakkal Royal Trust.

The government has undoubtedly taken a keen interest to preserve the Arakkal family heritage which had played a prominent role in the history of Malabar region.
